This Calls for Gingerbread!

It's such a cliche to tell someone that you just can't believe how the time has flown when they have a missionary coming come. It sure didn't always fly on by while I was on my own mission, and there were times when it felt like Chase wasn't ever coming home. But then before you know it, you're waiting at the airport, ready for the best hug you've ever had in your life. And the time really does seem to cruise.

Our dear Mayfields welcomed home their missionary Paige on December 4th (two months already since Chase's return!). We were so excited to see her, and grateful that they were up to inviting us over for our annual gingerbread house night.

Misty and I planned a dinner - soup, salad and breadsticks - and I bought many gingerbread houses. Sadly, Romney wasn't feeling well, so she didn't join us this year. I think the times of us having all of our kids present for all of our traditions are coming to an end, by the way. Kind of breaks my heart!

Anyway, it was so delightful to get a big returned-missionary hug from Paige. She is such a darling girl. I'm totally in love with her and her sisters too. Just some of my favorite young people around. And their adorable big brother.

So...something very weird happened. Chase actually tried to make his gingerbread house look nice. For the first time ever. Usually there are maimed gingerbread people falling off the roof, or the Hulk smashing through the windows or something bloody is happening. Not this year. His house was nothing short of adorable and quite put mine to shame. I couldn't have been prouder.

Mine.

Chase's.

Emma's lovely snowy cabin in the woods.

Dear Elle took over Chase's role of creating comic horror gingerbread, going with a skanky theme. Her big sister was a bit horrified. It's not easy to be home from a mission at first. Everything is horrifying. Naughty Elle.
