Always Worth It

At the start of the summer Emma put together her summer bucket list, and of course one of the items on the list was a breakfast cookout up Millcreek Canyon. When this list first got made, it sure felt like we had all the time in the world to check off all that fun at our leisure. However, as I have mentioned, this summer has been rather busier than I expected. Suddenly we only had a few weeks before school started again and we had to get on it if we wanted to do any of this!

We picked Saturday the 24th to have our cookout. It may seem a little unwise to plan for a canyon activity on one of Utah's summer holidays, (Pioneer Day), but it really turns out that if you're willing to get up early you'll always beat the crowds.

We meant to get ready the night before but Troy and I went out with friends the night before and saw one of my favorite stand-up comics of all time (Tom Papa) and went to bed very late and didn't even think about breakfast. When we groggily woke up the next morning we realized that the cookout breakfast day had snuck up on us and we considered postponing. But then I thought, it's just not that hard to pull together a few things to cook up in a pan full of butter. We can do this. And it's true! It doesn't have to be a big old deal, it doesn't have to be all perfect and fancy. Just grab some eggs and salt, maybe some bread and if you're lucky some sausage, and wake up your kids and go up the canyon. Luckily our girls were really happy to go and didn't mind getting woken up early.

We found a lovely little spot at the end of a trail so we didn't have people walking through our site - except for the cute little kid who got ahead of his family on the trail and came up our path to say hi. We pulled out the stove, got some pans warming up, and started cooking up egg sandwiches with sausage on the side. Being up in the trees and out of the heat was basically just heavenly. It was of course totally worth the scramble of not planning ahead and getting stuff together to enjoy a cool and leafy morning together with the girls.
