It's been a very long time that I have wanted to make a sweater for Troy. In fact, I started one about a decade ago and not only did I know very little about making sweaters, but I picked the dullest pattern possible, and yucky yarn. I worked on it for a while, then kept it in a bag for a while, then finally sent the icky yarn to the thrift store and cut my losses.
This time I decided to actually ask Troy what kind of sweater he'd want, and he and I looked over a variety of patterns on my favorite knitting website, Ravelry. He wanted something fun and cabled (hooray!) and he picked out this gorgeous pattern called Cambria. We of course decided on a sage green because hello, it's us. Then I began.
That was about 18 months ago. It turns out that I had the sage green already, but I didn't have enough. I knit the whole front of the sweater and half of the back before realizing that I wouldn't have enough for the sleeves. (People, weigh your yarn before you start a project. Trust me on this.) I tried for a while to find yarn similar enough to be okay, but yarn just isn't like that. It was very disheartening. In fact, I still haven't unraveled that one - it's too depressing. But I should. It's lovely yarn and should be used for something.
Anyway, I finally just did the right thing and got help from the expert at my favorite yarn store - Whitney helped me pick out this heavenly silvery sage. And I began knitting, again.
In case I haven't mentioned it before, I'll tell you that I have a bad habit of making sweaters too big, no matter how carefully I measure and check my gauge and my swatches. I just...do it wrong. You may remember the absolutely gorgeous sweater/coat I made that would actually fit Hagrid. In fact, that's what we call it. The Hagrid. No way am I taking it apart - it was the hardest thing I've ever done and everyone loves it. It's just really oversized.
Anyway, it was pretty nerve wracking to work on this lovely article for my lovely husband. I just wanted it to fit him perfectly. I did what I always do and measured as I went and checked my gauge and all that crap that normally doesn't work out for me. And guess what!? I put it on him and..... Best. Sweater. Ever!!!!!
We both love it. Of course, I finished it at the end of April so he wore it about one time before it was too hot out. But I expect it will be thoroughly enjoyed come the fall, by both him and me, because obviously I'm going to borrow it.
